Early on, it is clear that Moniz writes with an emotional agency that aims to shock, excite and leave you wanting more. ![]() At first this presents the story as a coming-of-age narrative, but adolescence is nothing but a series of misunderstandings, and this story quickly gives way to something darker. The ritual cements the friendship between the two young girls – one Black, one white - as they navigate teenagehood: from their gawky awkwardness to the fascination with their changing bodies. ‘Milk Blood Heat,’ the first and titular story of the collection opens on best friends, Ava and Kiera, slicing their palms to combine their blood with milk and drink.
