Nick's ultimate dream is to find a way to become human once again, but his quest for redemption is complicated by the arrival of fellow vampires Lucien LaCroix and Janette DuCharme. The only one who knows his true nature is his friend Natalie Lambert, a city medical examiner who doesn't like for Nicholas to use his special powers as she believes it increases his need for blood. Refusing to feed from humans, he survives by drinking bottled animal blood, something that most vampires find repulsive. Nicholas explains his need to work on the night shift by claiming to have a skin disorder, photodermatitis, which requires him to stay out of sunlight. Remorseful over centuries spent as a vampiric cold-hearted killer, Nicholas works as a cop and often ends up using his special abilities to bring criminals to justice. Unbeknownst to most of his colleagues, Nick is actually Nicholas, an 800-year-old vampire (his human name was a pun based on his status as a literal knight in medieval France). Since I live in Oregon (which has been home to its fair share of serial killers) I was eager to see my state come alive under St James’s pen. I loved them both for different reasons and then this book came along! Besides being a massive St James fan girl, the thing that drew me to this book was the setting! This book is set in Oregon and there is something about the Pac NW that really works for murder books! I didn’t think a book could top The Broken Girls and then along came The Sun Down Motel. I can’t say enough good things about her books just read them if you haven’t already! Especially the newest books like The Broken Girls and The Sun Down Motel. Her books (especially the more recent ones) are the perfect mix of murder, ghosts, horror, and gothic. I had her latest novel pre ordered for MONTHS in advance. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of a fan I am of Simone St James! I have read every single one of her books and she is absolutely an auto buy author for me. |
